In a 1916 Yearbook for Tomah High School, Tomah,Wisoncin was a story of a woman who went on to be in Opera. Her name was Lulu Janes who graduated in 1894. Quote from yearbook."Lulu Janes known professionally as Jane Abercombie graduated from Tomah High School in 1894. She sttended the University of Wisconsin and a member of the Gamma Phi Beta Sorority. She studied the piano at the University and in Milwaukee. After teaching piano at Wausau,Wisconsin she became a teacher in the Wausau schools. In a performance of "Bohemian Girl" given by the home talent, She appeared in the role of Arline and sucess was so great that she began to give her voice serious consideration. It was after this production that she first met her husband Tom Abercrombie engaged from Chicago to sing one of the roles after there was no one available in Wausau .
The following fall she went ot Chicago where she studied voice and after that traveled as a year as a member of Lyceum Company.
The next season while members of the same opera company she and Mr. Abercrombie were married in Florence,Alabama.
The company was playing the same opera as when they met,"The Bohemian Girl". It was while residing in Chicago the next year that she was first engaged in the Grand Opera and has toured over the United States and Canada, appearing with great success in praticlly every large city in North America. Also article stated her rise was rapid after her first role as Elsa in Lohengrin.
Early in 1913 she with her family went to Europe. Most of the time was spent in Berlin where she studied for 2 years. Owing to vastly changed conditions in Europe following the outbreak of war, she returned to this country in December fo 1914, and has devoted her time to concert and recital work. She now resides looks like 600 block of Klimbark Avenue,Chicago with her husband and little daughter Gertrude." Written by Mrs. C.L. Anderson
The article has a beautiful photo of Jane Abercombie. I was looking for some old photos. And now I know who Gertrude became...thought she might be a relative but is not. If you would like a copy of the photo will scan and send. Hope this helps, Ane
