Yes, Earle was adopted. The name of the people who adopted him was Smith but he didn't use the name, although legally he was Earle Smith. He was adopted as an older child. He didn't want to live with the Smiths either. He often stayed with his birth Mother, etc. There could be more information on him or his one child under the name Earle Smith.
I'm not certain if the other older brother in this family, James, was ever adopted or not. The next 4 children were adopted and used their adopted names and we don't have anything for Lawrence (Larry) and Patricia (Patti).
