Mr. Gaither, In the 1870 U.S. census, there were 454 persons named "John Davis" born in Wales enumerated across the country. In the 1880 U.S. census, there were 600 persons named "John Davis" born in Wales enumerated across the country. One in TX - but the not the same one who was there in 1870. Neither were living in west Texas. Neither were there Indian agents living in west Texas in the 1870's. There were only 153 persons in the entire state of Texas enumerated as Indian in the 1870 Federal census. 33 of those were in El Paso county, the only "west" Texas county with any enumerated Indians. All of those were Mexican Indians, all but one living in San Elizario in El Paso county. I found a likely candidate for your John Davis. In 1870, this J.D., a black smith, b. 1849 in Wales was in Smith county, TX. He was single in 1870. The downside of this data is that Smith county is near as far from west Texas as one can be and still be in TX. There's another John Davis born in Wales in the 1880 TX census in Caldwell county - also a long ride by horseback from west Texas. He was born in 1861, white, and single, working as a servant in the household of Wm H. Ramsey. 1870, TX, Smith, Etna, Page: 251B Davis, John, 21, white, b. Wales, single, black smith IN 1880, there were 2 girls named Matilda of about the right age - one in Bowie county, age 7, black, d/o Abby Wilson, b. AL; the other in Brazoria county, age 8, mulatto, d/o Eliza Davis, mulatto, b. LA There are no Cherokee records for Texas after about 1839/40, as the few Cherokee who had lived there briefly starting about 1819, were either dead, or returned to AR Territory by that time. There is currently no recognized Cherokee organization in Texas. good luck. gd Notify Administrator about this message?
