Elizabeth NEWTON, whose name as an "Indian maiden" was said to have been Wada MISSOURI, was born ca 1758 in the Santee River region (96th District SC). She was more than likely Eastern Sioux, these were the people who lived there at the time she was born there, the tribe would have been Catawba (although other of the Eastern Sioux were joining them as the settlers moved in). I believe she took the name NEWTON after one of the two towns of the Catawba, one of which was Newton, the other Turkey Head. Here's a link to a history of the Catawba: http://www.dickshovel.com/Catawba.html She married Edward BOX b. 1754 in the same region. Supposedly he was an Anglo-American captive of the Cherokee who was raised Cherokee, I am interested if anyone is able to tell me more about this legend, because the elements of the legend as far as I can find out don't fit in with the timeline. For instance, he was supposed to have been captured from the Bush River settlement, yet those settlers arrived sometime after his supposed capture. And if he was an Anglo-American who had been captured and raised Cherokee, how and why did he come to be born in Catawba (Eastern Sioux) territory and marrying a Catawba woman? Also the Bush River settlers (Newberry SC) were Quakers from Pennsylvania, while the BOX family seems to have originated in Virginia, I haven't found any with the BOX family name on the Quaker lists. I am thinking that perhaps over time, and with many retellings, the tribe and other details were forgotten. So I am going with what can be documented which is that Elizabeth/Wada MISSOURI's "English" name NEWTON is identical to the name of one of the two Catawba towns/settlements and that she was born in Catawba territory at the time the Catawba lived there.
