Dallas Morning News Dallas, Texas July 29, 1893 The Akers Case Gainesville, Texas, July 28: The examining trial of G. W. AKERS, charged with swindling by representing himself to be a solicitor for citizenship in the Cherokee Nation, was begun before Judge HILL this afternoon. The courtroom was filled with spectators, a great many of whom were clients of Akers who had been paid $20 to prosecute their claims. Three of the complaints against Akers were quashed and he was placed on trial for swindling ENNIS W. WATKINS of Thackerville, Indian Territory by fraud and false representation s out of $20. Mr. WATKINS was kept on the stand all afternoon and it is not likely that the examining trial will be finished tomorrow. W. H. MAYES, brother of the late Chief MAYES of the Cherokee Nation, and assistant executive secretary to Chief HARRIS, is here as a witness for the state to prove that Akers had no authority from the Cherokee government to solicit claims to citizenship. The trial is eliciting widespread interest and its probable result is the chief topic of discussion on the streets. Notify Administrator about this message?
