I think I got the answer for you Nancy. Bajram is a muslim religios holiday which is celebrated around the world from muslim comunity.I think the day is around january 20th every year I am not sure because the day refers to the islam(turkish) calendar and not the western calendar. Bajram as a term, is coming from a religous legend which says that Great Bajram has to sacrifice his son called Islam for the sake of Allah,(means God). There's a great muslim comunity in Albania. The history says that Turkish kept Albania occupied for more than 500 years since in 15th century to the year of 1912.On November 28 of 1912 Albainia won the independence and this day,November 28 is called Independence Day.It is the most powerfull celebration in Albania. Before 14th century,Albania was a Christian country.Turkish for this long period of 500 years made it through to put this religion belief among albanians. They built a lot of "xhami"(churches). They changed some customs, wearing, cooking recipes etc. They tried very hard, to prevent using of albanian language from people and using turkish instead. There was a lot of pressure,violence,killing,punishment.....from turkish government. As a result they couldnt win.The albanian language was preserved. But many turkish words are still in use today in Albania I mean a lot, like penxhere=window, pilaf=rice, byrek=pie etc. Many albanian names are with turkish decency like Bajram,Hasan,Muharrem,Ali,Mehmet, etc. The most famous ,legendary price who fought turks to liberate the country was Scanderbeg, which for the albanians is National Hero, the greatest hero of albanian history.A monument of him is located today in the downtown of Tirana(capital of Albania),right at the Scanderbeg Square.http://members.fortunecity.com/tonig/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/1skenderbeu.jpg His look is still very impressive to albanians. http://www.sea-melo.com/res/Default/skenderbeu.jpg http://www.forumishqiptar.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=88078&stc=1&d=1176691650 (freedom-Independence-justice) Notify Administrator about this message?
