Just a few notes, Don.
Mattie is indeed in the 1900 and 1920 Patten censuses. Don't have a death date for her, and I didn't see her grave there (and I transcribed every one in 2004) or a note in the town cemetery book about her.
The 1900 census calls her husband "Samuel". I assume he "modernized" his name, since the census records the same children that you do.
The 1900 census has "Lottie E.", b. Jun 1891. The 1920 census: "Charlotte", b. 1893. As you know, Patten is Magicland, where women actually grow younger with each census. This is a given.
Further, "Martha K." (b. Nov 1898) in the 1900 census emerges as Eva M. in 1910. Go figure. Guess they're the same too.
The men, however, rarely succumb to this.
