Col Thomas Polk/John Lafferty Revolutionary War

HI folks
I am writing this in the hope that some kind volunteer can assist with some local research or perhaps point me in the correct general direction. ( I live in PA)
My ancestor, John Lafferty, was born 1 Jan 1755. Place of birth is uncertain. I have a copy of his Revolutionary War Pension file here at home. In it he states that he enlisted under a Capt. ?? Smith, in the Regiment commanded by Col. Thomas Polk. He enlisted 10 Jun 1776 and was discharged 15 Jun 1779. It does not say WHERE he enlisted, or WHERE he was discharged. I have hit a road block with his ancestry, altho I believe he may have been born in New Jersey, that is not certain at all.
I am hoping someone can find more information on his enlistment and discharge and perhaps help to find his place of birth and his parents names. If anyone has any ideas, please email me. My email address is: cbarber@brockwaytv.com. I will appreciate any and all suggestions.
Thank you!
Carol
