Am not related but may be of interest to someone who is. I have no further info, but additional newspaper extracts may be found at URL: http://www.newspaperabstracts.com/index.php Vern D ///////////////////////////////////////////////// Transcribed by Dee Sardoch ////////////////////////////////////////////////// Stockton Daily Argus Stockton, San Joaquin Co., CA *********************************88 >>Saturday, 15 Aug 1857<< LETTER from LA GRANGE -- Death by Drowning Aug. 14th, 1857 Editor, Argus: A young man named ARMSTRONG, a driver of Dr. CLARKE’s stage, running between this place and Sonora, was drowned last evening about 4 o’clock, while in bathing. One or 2 friends were in the water at the same time, and so little did he struggle that they were not aware of his danger till too late to render any assistance. He went down the 1st time, as if diving, and when he came up again, only the top of his head appeared above the muddy water. This caused his companions to call for the boat, when he rose again and struck out to swim, and then, without further struggle, disappeared. Up to a late hour, every effort was made for the recovery of his body, but without success. ARMSTRONG was from Pennsylvania, and was esteemed by all his acquaintances. He was frugal, industrious and sober. Yours, Teddy Notify Administrator about this message?
