I'm looking for information on Robert Ashby who married Matilda Shumate(Schumate). Listed on the 1850 census are a Robert Ash and Matilda Ash,both aged 42 of Nelson county. Children listed are E.Ash female 16, C.Ash female 14, Malisea Ash female 10, George Ash male 6. This George Ash (George Washington Ash) is my G/Grandfather.
I've noticed on some family trees a Robert Ashby married a Matilda Shumate or Schumate,on others she married Robert Ash. Are these two different sets of people??
There are some indications that Robert Ashby was a cousin of Matilda Shumate, and changed their name to Ash after marriage.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
