I have a land grant for 200 acres given to a Thomas Ashby who served for Virginia. However, no one knows which Thomas Ashby this was and Thomas Ashby Jr is no longer accepted by the DAR because they aren't sure which one it was either and the woman who supposedly joined on him, Lois Stanley, according to Ms. Reese evidently didn't. I have her papers and she joined on Jacob Baughman(Bowman) and no Ashbys are even in her lineage. I believe Jr was too old to have fought for 3 years so it may have been the Thomas who married Mary McCullough as his age would have been closer to service age and three of his sons served;Bladen, Silas and Hankerson. In some states, Pennsylvania especially you had to sign up and go or pay someone to go for you if you were between 15-50 I believe. Thomas Jr, if he was born about 1715 would have been around 58 in 1773. If you'd like a copy of the land grant it's available on the library of Virginia website. Pennsylvania archives hold the pay records of Steven, Silas and Hankerson Ashby. I also hold land grants for Bladen and the heirs of Hankerson given by Patrick Henry. You can email me for copies if you can't find them online.
