My great(x3) grandfather James Ashby is recorded as being born in 1787 in Frant, Sussex in the 1851 census, when he was living in Military Road, Canterbury. sussexweald.org has two James Ashbys b. 1788 derived from Shirley Walsh's records. One is said to be the offspring of Thomas Ashby and Sarah Sayers of Lamberhurst, Kent, the other of another Thomas Ashby born about 1755 of unknown parentage and another Sarah of unknown previous surname. On sussexweald.org this second Thomas is said to be the miller at Bartley Mill. I have ruled out the James born to the Lamberhurst Thomas. I haven't been able to find any corroboration for the James born to the Frant Thomas in 1788. I am looking for that, and some parentage for the Frant Thomas, and his wife Sarah. There are fair number of Thomas's married to Sarahs in the Ashby families on the Weald. I'm speculating that the 1755 Thomas may in fact be the Thomas born in 1749 to Richard Ashby and Elizabeth Bensted of Wadhurst - really only because of the proximity of birth years and that closeness of Wadhurst and the Bartley Mill. My James was married to a Mary, Jane, Mary Jane or Mary J, born in Shoreditch and had two sons born in Tonbridge - Charles in c. 1827 and Henry in c. 1835. I would like some documentary evidence for their birth. A Mary Kemp married a James Ashby at Shoreditch St Leonards in 1828 (found in Pallot's index) Any information that bears on any of this, please. Derrick Ashby Notify Administrator about this message?
