Paula,

Thanks for the quick response.

I'm a descendant of Richardson Wiles and Sarah Elizabeth "Sally" Atwood. Their daughter, Mary Wiles, married William Harrison “Billy” Rayl on 2 Nov 1842 in Switzerland Co, IN, and later moved to Tipton Co, IN. Mary and Billy are my gg-grandparents. Interestingly, some of my distant Rayl relatives moved from Guilford Co, NC to Monroe Co, IN, in the late 19th Century, too.

John T. Atwood was born 1768 in Westmoreland Co, VA and was a cooper (barrel-maker). I have not found his wife’s surname, but it isn’t Elizabeth Roy of Shenandoah Co, VA who some researchers claim – she apparently married a different John Atwood (they stayed in Shenandoah Co) and had nine children.

John T. Atwood is found in the Surry Co, NC, tax lists from 1807 to 1822, and in the records for Surry Co as late as 1825. The 1810 Surry Co census lists nine people – John, wife, Elizabeth, and seven others, obviously their children:
Two males (under 5) – Thomas b. 12 Apr 1802 NC or VA; William Franklin b. 1803 Halifax Co, VA
One male (10-15) – Jesse b. 1797 VA
One male (16-25) – James b. 1794 VA
One female (under 5) – Sarah Elizabeth b. 1800 VA
One female (10-15) – Polly b. 1799 VA
One female (16-25) – Elizabeth b. 1795 VA

John T.’s parents were most probably James Atwood and Martha McGehee. Martha married William Collins after John’s death. There is lots of info on James and Martha and the Atwood/McGehee families in Prince Edward Co, VA records.

James Atwood’s parents were James Atwood (d. 1771 Prince Edward Co, VA) and Mary Turner. The Atwoods were plantation owners who raised tobacco in the late 17th and throughout the 18th Centuries. James’ father was probably Richard Atwood, his father being James Atwood who was born in Yorkshire, England and died March 1686 in Middlesex Co, VA.

James and Mary’s son, William Atwood, left Prince Edward Co, VA for Stokes Co and Rowan Co, NC. He married Sarah Ligon. They are connected to the Prince Edward Co, VA Atwoods in deed records (1792) for property they sold in VA after moving to Stokes Co.

Please email me privately if you want to share information closer to our own generation.

Eleanor Rayl
