The Rev. John Bachman (1790-1874) of Charleston, South Carolina is perhaps best-remembered for his 19th century collaborations with nature artist John James Audubon, who honored his friend by naming Bachman's Sparrow and Bachman's Warbler. Bachman was a truly versatile man: Lutheran minister & theologian, author, educator & academician, naturalist, and social activist before, during, and after the Civil War. Among many other accomplishments, Bachman was founder of Newberry College, a four-year school established in 1856, and of the Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary. He twice presided over the South Carolina Lutheran Synod. In conjunction with Newberry's 150th anniversary, the College alumni association is holding a John Bachman Symposium in April 2006 to bring focus to his life and work and to commemorate the College's sesquicentennial. The Symposium Web site--which also contains a wealth of historical information about Bachman--is at http://www.johnbachman.org "Nature, God, and Social Reform in the Old South" wil be held 20-23 April 2006 in Newberry SC. In addition to six keynote addresses by Bachman authorities, we hope to have several concurrent papers by persons interested in Bachman's genealogy. Papers can be given by knowledgeable students, laypeople, or academic professionals. If you have--or someone you know has--information to present about Bachman's ancestors or descendants, please see http://www.johnbachman.org/CallForPapersMain.html and consider attending the Symposium to present a short, 10-12 minute paper. I'll be happy to answer any questions you may have, and please forward this message to listservs, chat groups, or individuals with interest in the Rev. John Bachman. If you have a Bachman-related Web site, please provide a link from it to http://www.johnbachman.org Thanks, and best wishes, BILL Notify Administrator about this message?
