Are there Banke families in Britain or Ireland ?

Hi,

The name de Banke arises in our family tree.

Hans Christian Gundersen was a Norwegian seaman who served on vessels trading with Britain and Ireland.

Hans married Mary Blackett de Banke Phillips on 19th July at St Annes church, Belfast in the north of Ireland.

It seems that there are very few families with the name Banke in Britain or Ireland.

George F. Black's book " Surnames of Scotland " mention variations in the spelling, e.g. Banks and Bankis. It states these names may have originated in the Orkney Islands which would fit reasonably well with Scandanavian origins.

I hope more British and Irish Banke families are mentioned in this site in due course.

Christopher
