I am a descendant of Johanna Maria Banke and Frederick Strissel. The surname was Strissel with an i, not an e, & was originally von Strissel. Johanna was the daughter of Mary Papenfuss & Herman Banke (Sr.). We have a physical description of Herman Sr. (who died before Mary emigrated)from one of my great-aunts--"He was a little Jewish shoemaker with curly black hair." My mother's mother was the last surviving child of 11 children of Johanna Banke & Frederick Strissel. Frederick Strissel's sister Pauline married Johanna's brother Herman Banke (Jr.). The 2 men met on the ship to America, became friends, showed pictures of their respective sisters, and agreed to marry each other's sisters if they were sent for!
Johanna died in childbirth in 1889,3 years after my grandmother Cecelia Sophia Strissel was born. Frederick Strissel later married a second time and had 13 more children! Several of the 24 children died in infancy or early childhood. The Strissels lived in west-central Minnesota.
