BATCHELORS OF GEORGIA

Hello Batchelor researchers,

I would like to share with you some information I've come across. I've been researching Cordy BATCHELOR Sr. and wife Mary CONINE. Cordy and Mary were married in Putnam Co. GA in 1829. Cordy and Mary were the parents of seven children. I'm still looking for when and where Cordy and Mary died. I believe they lived all of their married life in Putnam Co. GA.

I ran across some information regarding Cordy and Mary's oldest son, Leverett BATCHELOR. I ran across the data while doing other CONINE related research in Clark Co. AR. Here is what I found.

!OBITUARY "DEATH OF MR. L. BATCHELOR" "Leverett Batchelor was born in Putnam Co. GA, July 30, 1830, and died in Morgan Co. GA, July 19, 1911. On Oct. 10, 1861, he enlisted in Putnam Light Infantry, Co. G, 12th Georgia Regiment, R.T. Davis, Captain. His service was in the Army of Northern Virginia, under Lee and Jackson, throughout the war. In the battle of McDowell, VA., May 8, 1862, he was severely wounded, but after several months concalescence served through to the end, being one of the few present at the surrender April 9, 1865. The subject of this memoir was the last one of a family remarkable for service as Confederate soldiers. He was one of six brothers who served in the same company with the writer, Leverett, David, Early, Solomon, Richard, and Cordy. They had one sister. Thus did the aged father give up all his boys to the Southern cause. David was killed at Spottsylvania May 10, 1864. Solomon, Cordy, Richard, and Early suffered for months in northern prisons. At the close, Leverett and his four brothers returned home, and as good citizens, entered heartily into the work of restoring the Southland. In this, Leverett was engaged almost to the end of his life, having worked more than forty years after surrender, and all this long life was in Putnam, except two years at the last with a married daughter just over the line in Morgan. He leaves to mourn their loss his widow, who was Miss Sarah Lancaster, to whom he was married in January, 1850, and his daughter and six sons of whom Frank and Florence are among the most prominent and best loved citizens of this county. I am all the more pleased to write this memoir because my comrade was so quiet and unassuming in life. May he rest in peace". "ROBERT YOUNG"

DEATH: NOTE: Capt. Robert Young was Commander of Putnam Company Georgia Volunteers during the Civil War. In another clipping, almost exactly the same story is told, with the addition that the Mr. L. Batchelor of this article also left these sons: Leverett and Lee of Hot Springs County, Arkansas, and Richard and David of Dade County, Florida.

This second clipping tells that Leverett's brother David was mortally woundned and Leverett stayed with him on the battlefield until he died. Leverett then buried him in a shallow grave dug with his "bayonette".

The reason this memoir-obit was in Clark Co. AR., is because Leverett had two sons who went to AR upon reaching adulthood. Those two sons married and raised families in AR., one in Clark Co. and the other in Hot Springs Co. AR.

I'm also including the obituary for Sarah LANCASTER, BATCHELOR, wife of Leverett BATCHELOR Sr.

DEATH: !Obituary-"DEATH OF MRS. SARAH BATCHELOR"
"On last Thursday, November 20th, Mrs. Sarah Batchelor died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. A.J.Moore, near Buckhead. She was nearing her ninety-third birthday, lacking only a few weeks of reaching this venerable age. Mrs. Batchelor was, before her marriage, Miss Sarah Lancaster, and she spent the greater portion of her life in Putnam County. For the past few years, however, she has made her home with her daughter in Morgan County. Mrs. Batchelor was a member of the Crooked Creek primitive Baptist Church. Funeral services were held November 21st and the body was laid to rest in the cemetery at Buckhead. Surviving Mrs. Batchelor are two daughters, Mrs. S.B. McLain of Arkansas and Mrs. A.J. Moore of Morgan County; six sons, Leverett and Lee Batchelor of Arkansas, Richard and David Batchelor of Florida; Frank L. Batchelor and Florence S. Batchelor of Putnam County."
Sarah's death is thought to have been Nov. 20, 1924.

The name of the newspaper is missing, but it would be fair to assume that the clipping is from a Putnam County Georgia newspaper.

Just thought I would post the information in case someone could use the data.
