Need help with family history

I am researching my family migration history in order to complete a paper for my Human Geography class. What I know so far is that the history of the Batchelors begins in the 1600s. What I would like to know is where exactly they came from and why. Migration during the 1600s is so much earlier than the migration periods discussed in my class, so I would like to find out what kind of factors were influencing a move to America. I also found out that they spread from VA/NC and continued to move south and westward. Was this due to the agricultural frontier? I am very new to this and would appreciate any ideas that anyone can provide.
