My ancestor Peggy Pate married William Beck in 1812, Morgan County, Ga. William and Peggy had a son Thomas Pate Beck, born in 1827, Pickens County, Alabama. (Their other two sons were named for their father, William, and paternal grandfather, Jesse.) Something I've just realized lately is that Thomas P.Beck is often listed in family trees as having been born in 1815, which I believe is wrong--and which I believe I have had wrong for a long time. ---This date is based on an 1860 census that has Thomas being 45, born in Alabama. (Alabama wasn't open for settlement in 1815. and the Becks were still in Georgia.) ---The 1830 census for his father William Beck in Pickens, Alabama, has one son 0-5, and two sons 5-10. ---The 1840 census in AL follows the same Beck family ages. ---The 1850 census in Miss. has Thomas as 23, b. in AL. Since three censuses match one another, all have Thomas being born in Alabama regardless of age, and also match Thomas's age for when he married in 1847, I believe the 1860 census is wrong. Unfortunately Thomas died by 1864, as may be indicated by the canceling of a land deed filed for in 1860, so there is no follow-up census or other records. Since Thomas and his family moved from Miss. to Ark. in 1860, and his wife's age is wrong too--but all of the kids' ages and middle initials are correct--my guess is that someone else may have reported the family for this census.
