William Oswald Bell was born in Meerut, India in 1821, son of Captain William Bell of the Bengal Horse Artillery and his first wife, Jane Thule. W.O.Bell worked for the Indian Customs Services and married Frances Sophia Jones in 1846. They had 12 children all born in India;
