According to the site shown above, Cearbhall macDunlainge was native Irish and not Viking. He came to fame in 845 by defeating a Viking army at the battle of Carn Brammit. He did, however, frequently enlist the aid of Vikings to do battle with his Irish rivals. This site spells his son's name as 'Braenen.'

So, perhaps this is the first instance of Branan/Brannan/Brannon/Brannen/Branan/Branin/Brennan/Brennen.

Maybe DNA analysis will sort us all out one day.
