Lenore, this may help a little. According to Louis James' California death record his mother's maiden name was Boismenue. In the 1900 census for St. Clair, Illinois Maggie is living wih her brother, George. This time the name is spelled Borsmann. There are three children listed, Louis James b: Aug 1894, Josephine b: Oct 1892 and Agnes b: Dec 1896. Maggie's birthdate is listed as December, 1865. In the same census for Missouri there is a William in the MO state mental hospital who may be William Gardner, age and place of birth is right.
