Donaville Broussard/Felix Broussard/Emalina Navarre

These are people of color.

My interest is in Felix Broussard and Emalina Navarre, born in the Carencro, LA area around 1860. They are my great great grandparents on my maternal side of the family and I have a photo of them both. My interest is finding a connection between Felix Donaldville Broussard and Donaville Broussard, the ex-slave who was documented and photographed for his contribution to the WPA slave narratives http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~ewyatt/_borders/Texas%20Slave%20Narratives/TEXAS%20B/Broussard,%20Donaville.html .

In searching for Felix's parents, I have found Ordalie and Donaville Broussard in the 1910 Louisiana Census and their names are pretty butchered. They are listed as Doneville and Ordalie Brownard instead of Donaville and Odalie Broussard. Next door is Donaville's 90 year old mother, Armance Carmouche, who he mentions in the slave narratives also.

I believe Donaville Broussard may be Felix Broussard's father, but the years aren't adding up. Donaville states he was born in 1850 and records indicate Felix Donaldville Broussard was born in 1860. Felix Donaldville Broussard married Emalina Navarre in 1880 and list his mother as Odalie Savoie. The coincidence for me is that Donaville, the ex-slave, is married to a woman named Ordalie (Odalie) in the 1910 census for 30 years(possibly his second marriage). Also, that Felix has a middle name of Donaldville, similar to "Donaville."

But following this chronologically, in the slave narratives Donaville mentions getting married at 20 years old, which is 1870. Felix married in 1880, and this doesn't compute. It's possible that Felix could have been born out of previous relationships, yet he listed Odalie Savoie as his mother on the marriage documentation, very possibly the same Ordalie listed as Donaville's wife in the 1910 Louisiana Census. My other thought is they could be brothers. Yet he never mentions having any siblings while telling his story of how he and his mother survived after being sold to different people upon their owners death, and life after emancipation.

Dazed and confused. Any help or insight is welcomed.

Best,
Lyn
