I'm trying to pinpoint where my Thornton Carter (1778 VA) fits in with the Thomas Carter/Penele Carrell line. We've done DNA testing, so I'm fairly confident that this is where we fit in. Unfortunately, I don't know through which son! Penele Carrell factors into my search because Thornton named my ancestor (his first-born son) Josiah Panel/Penele/Pennell Carter. This makes me believe that Thornton descends through Thomas's son Robert or his son John because apparently Penele Carrell died fairly early. Another clue: I found a reference, in an Ancestry.com tree, that John had a son named Josiah. However, in searching GenForum, I found that John had a son named John, Jr (no mention of a Josiah), so Josiah may have belonged to John, Jr and not to John, Sr. Or, that information could be entirely incorrect! But, given the fact that Thornton named his son Josiah Penele, I think that there must have been a reason for doing so. Yet another clue: Thornton appears in the NC census in 1810, and married Delilah (Dilly) Harward in Wake County in 1811. He remained in the Chatham/Wake area until he appeared in Claiborne County, TN in 1840. The other Carter names that show up during the period between 1810 and 1830 are William, Allen, Thomas, John, and Mary (among others). Does anyone have information on John, Jr and/or Josiah Carter in this same line? I would deeply appreciate any insights that could help me nail this down! I know that there's a Josiah Carter who descended through Thomas Jr, but Thomas Jr's mother would have been Susanna, and not Penele... It's so confusing! Notify Administrator about this message?
