Who Were John Friendly Cassell's (b.1781) Parents?

Do we have this information?

I grew up in Pickens, South Carolina (burial site of John Friendly) where there have lived many generations of Cassells. I now reside in Portland, Oregon & have within the past months started to compile my family's genealogy.

Based on the data I've been able to find online, there seems to be a gap with Cassels/Cassells in SW Virginia to John Friendly's birth in Barnwell, South Carolina. I'm trying to decipher how it came to be that John Friendly was born in South Carolina. Was there a gradual migration of a line from Virginia to South Carolina that has not been well-documented? Was John Friendly Cassell a direct descendant of Jacob Cassel of Russell & later Augusta counties Virginia?

My hunch is that John Friendly Cassell is of a first generation of the lineage that began using the Cassell spelling as opposed to Cassel/Castle. This would explain why it seems as if he appeared from nowhere.

Does anyone out there have any specific information to back up my hunch? If so, it would be greatly appreciated.

Joe Chappell
