John G. Casto: Now it can be told...

If any of you have visited Danita Smith's Casto Connections website you may have seen the updates she tells about in her recent message. For over 2 years a Casto DNA Project has been underway. I became interested in DNA as a genealogical tool mainly because I thought it might narrow down the country of origin of the Casto family, as well as seeing if we were all actually related. What I found is that myself as well as a 2nd cousin & a 3rd cousin were DNA matches. We did not match the other 11 Casto men even closely. What this means is that our earliest known ancestor, John George Casto, had a father that wasnt a Casto. How he came to take the name Casto is a mystery. He was born in Wood co.(West)Virginia in 1805. The family legend is that he left home at an early age & his Civil War pension file seems to back this up. He says he moved when he was 14 to Gallia Co. Ohio. So far no WV or Ohio records have been found on him. He came to Missouri about 1835 & spent the next 60 in SW Missouri. His life & movements in Missouri have been pretty well documented. Its his early years we dont know anything about. Its been handed down that he rarely if ever talked of his early life with his children. If any of his descendants have any information they could share or want to contact me please do.
Thank you
David E. Casto
