Moscow is in Fayette County, TN, and right outside of Memphis. According to Dyer's Compendium the 1st Illinois Light Artillery, including Battery I (eye), marched "to Memphis, Tenn., June 1-July 21, and [had] duty there till November." Since there wasn't any action around that time, my guess is that he was one of the 13 men who died of disease.

Have you obtained his Compiled Military Service Record from the National Archives?
