Thank you, Allen, for that very enlightening background information as to how the companies were formed and why there was so often a delay between enlistment and mustering in. That is almost identical to what another friend was telling me about the process in North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia, which is where most of my confederate ancestors joined up.
All this background info is very helpful as I read through the various papers in my ancestor's Civil War service records.
