If this is the correct family in 1880, it makes the state of birth even more confusing:
1880 Hamilton Cty Tx
79 79 Strickland J R 55/ Tn/NC/NC
Naruagm 53m wufe NC/NC/NC
James 29, Tn
Mary 22, dau Tn
Wesley 20 son Ark
Etta 16, dau, Ark
Joseph 12, son Ark
80 80 Strickland, Clark, 24 Tn
Nannie wife Mo

1870 Carroll Cty Ark
32 33 Strickling, John r 44 Tn
Mariah Jane 41 NC
Jas Monroe 19 Tn
Selio Partees 17, female, Tn
John Clark 14, Tn
Mary Susan 13, Tn
Wm Wesltey 9 Ark
Candis Euhleus? 8 Ark
Zooellar, 5 Ark
Joseph Hriam l Ark

If John Ross is the J R Strick* who married Jane Clark in Gibson Tn in 1849, there are lots of Clarks in Gibson on the 1850 census.

If the family is the one on the 1850 Haywood Cty Tn census there are some Browns living with them: Jane gives NC as place of birth.
Lydie M Brown 27 born NC, John W 15
Tn, Caroline 13 Tn,
Lots of Clarks also in Haywood in 1850

There are 3 family trees at ancestry.com that have a Mariah Jane Clark, born Nov 30, 1927 in Tn; dau of Charles Clark and Elizabeth Davidson Miller, but none of the trees are sourced nor do they have a spouse for Mariah Jane Clark.

Bernice
