Silas Nelson Crain (spelled also Crane)was born ca 1849 in Illinois, possibly Marion County. He is living with his mother, Sarah, and siblings: Jeminia, 21; Austin, 19; Elizabeth, 16; Sarah, 14; John, 13; Rebecca, 10; Thomas, 5; and Silas, 2 in the 1850 Marion County Illinois census.
Silas continued to live in Marion County through the 1880 census where he has married and is living next door to his brother, Austin. Silas Nelson moves to Kansas by 1885.
Silas married Martha E. Smith 30 December 1869 in Marion Co. His brother, Austin, married Catherine Day 21 September 1853, also in Marion County.
