Hi Tonya,

If you are from the Abraham line (I believe Abe. was born in Barnwell Co. before his father, Peter, moved to Colleton), then we are distant cousins back to 1750.

First, I did not save some the search material since the dates did not seem to fit. So please give me a few days to pull it back up.

Secondly, yes it has been very difficult to establish the Native American marriages. However, one GA Crosby researcher has been able to confirm the stories past down about a 'full-blood' Native American marriage in the family.

In that particular case the Indian blood was from the Crosby male's wife's mother. But he contacted his relatives who are on a Native American registry and now so is he. In the later 1800s it was common to keep Indian bloodlines hush-hush. Especially in the events leading up to the various indian wars and the 'trail of tears'. Crosbys can be rather tight-lipped about some subjects.

I encourage you to look around -there are so many similar stories in GA and SC about Indian ancestors. Also I can put you in touch with the researcher I mentioned.

In any given individual or family, approximately 25% of our genes are deep ancestral genes going way back before our parents.

Indian bloodlines might not be the only explanation for the physical traits you describe. For example, there is a southeastern US Crosby line that has a storied link (reported to be substanciated) to Spanish pirates.

In America, we generally tend to be rather provencial about race, except when there is a dashing story. The facts about the treatment of Native Americans in the US are generally rather stark. So buckle your seat belt.

If you have the spare cash there is DNA testing available which might prove helpful, particularly for distinctive Native American genetic markers. But it is not inexpensive.

I prefer to trace family legends back to a point where you can find the facts. With the Crosby researcher I mentioned they were able to identify the specific tribe (Choctaw, I think) strictly by tracing family history. So that way you can learn something on the specific history and culture.

Tonya, please give me a few days. If I can re-trace my original search, I will send you something. All the best, Crosby Turner
