I am searching for information about the place of death and burial for Lott Crosby and his wife, Anna (surname unknown) Crosby. Lott Crosby was born circa 1785 in New York; he married Anna circa 1810; he died 02 Mar 1855 in the Town of Root, Montgomery Co., New York. It is believed that Lott was the son of Obadiah and Mary FOSTER Crosby. Anna (surname unknown) was born circa 1790 in Rensselaer Co., New York; she died 1855/60 likely in Root, Montgomery Co., New York. Anna’s surname may have been McCLURE; one of her sons was named Isaac McClure Crosby. One of Anna’s daughters was named Harriet Newell Crosby so the surname NEWELL may have some ancestral significance, too. The 1850 census of the Town of Root was the last known record of Lott Crosby with his family. The persons enumerated with Lott and Anna in 1850 are believed to be their children: Nathaniel (b. ca. 1831), Mary (b. ca. 1819), Rachel (b. ca. 1829), Harriet (b. ca. 1837). Enumerated adjacent to Lott and Anna Crosby is a person believed to be their oldest child, Stephen B. Crosby (b. ca. 1812). 1850 census of Root, Montgomery Co., NY lists: Lott Crosby 65 M Farmer NY Anna 60 F NY Nathaniel 19 M Farmer NY Mary 31 F NY Rachel 21 F NY Harriet (?) F NY Stephen Crosby 38 M Farmer NY Phebe 32 F NY Mary E. 1 F NY Lott Crosby died 02 Mar 1855 in the Town of Root. An abstract of his estate papers given to me by a Crosby researcher (Beverly Royer – thanks) lists Lott’s heirs as: Stephen D. CROSBY, Sarah A. SPORING, Nathaniel CROSBEY, Mary CROSBY, Elizabeth J. HOAG, Harriet A. BOWDISH, Obadiah CROSBEY, Isaac McClure CROSBY, Rachel H. HOAG, James A. CROSBY and David CROSBY. Lott’s wife, Anna (surname unknown) Crosby, resided in the Town of Root after his death. She and her children are enumerated there in the 1855 census of NYS, as follows: 1855 census of Root, Montgomery Co., NY lists: Anna Crosby 62 F Rennsselaer Co. Widowed 9 years in Root cannot read or write, owner of land Mary 36 F Child Montgomery Co. 9 years in Root (tayloress) Isaac 28 M Child Schoharie Co. 9 years in Root (farmer) Nathaniel 23 M Child Schoharie Co. 9 years in Root (farmer) Harriet N. 18 F Child Montgomery Co. 9 years in Root The 1855 census data indicates that Lott’s widow, Anna, is the current owner of the Crosby farm. The Crosby estate papers, filed 1 Apr 1859, reportedly transfer the family farm from the heirs of Lott Crosby to son Nathaniel Crosby. The size of the farm lot was 100 acres excepting “1/8th of an acre where the burying ground is.” I believe Anna (surname unknown) Crosby died 1855/60. I have not found her in the 1860 census record. Lott Crosby and wife, Anna, may be interred in the aforementioned burying ground on the Crosby farm in Root. I have not found any online cemetery data for Lott or Anna; however, not all of the cemeteries in Montgomery County have been inventoried. Any help identifying the places of death and interment for Lott Crosby (ca. 1785 – 1855) and his wife, Anna (surname unknown) Crosby (ca. 1790 – ca. 1859) would be much appreciated. Lott and Anna are my 3rd great-grandparents. Paul E. Newell Ellicott City, MD Notify Administrator about this message?
