Yeah, not being able to decipher his mother's maiden name is frustrating. I would like to obtain birth records for their children (Frank and Martha's children, that is) as this *may* give further/different information regarding Frank's place of birth. Actually, it seems clear that Frank could not read or write... or at least not well (until later). As you mentioned, the top form (the Marriage Affidavit) was clearly prepared by the clerk... thus the _____his Frank x Buza ____mark ... in other words, Frank made the "x" there and the clerk wrote his name and the words "his mark".... On the "Return of a Marriage...", it seems to us in the family that someone (other than Frank, because he could not read/write at the time) wrote his name as Frank Puce three times on that form and his father's name once as Mick Puce. He ... or perhaps Martha .. or some other attendee noticed the spelling error and corrected it, but missed the last one. This accounts for the "Buza" spelling on all the other marriage documents and the strange styling of the letters... the "g" versus "z" that you pointed out. In other words, "c" when converted to a "z" might easily be mistaken as a "g" ... careful review of the lettering on our part seems to point in this direction. I'm not completely discounting the possibility of a variant spelling, but I am very doubtful. I believe that "Buza" is the spelling for "the old country". Other marriage records, FYI http://i468.photobucket.com/albums/rr42/krbuza/fbuza2.jpg http://i468.photobucket.com/albums/rr42/krbuza/fbuza.jpg There is NO question as to "Martha J Calhoon"... that is clear (and supported by other records as well). There is no need to try to interpret her name with any variant spelling and her name is quite clear (though these documents do introduce a little uncertainty regarding her mother's name). another photo (headstone) http://i468.photobucket.com/albums/rr42/krbuza/frankbuza.jpg Actually, I'd be interested in tracing his brother George as well. George may have provided additional/different information regarding place of birth / parents names / etc. To date I have not identified that brother with any certainty.
