Farm land in Bohemia was measured in so-called “lans.” One lan (translated into English as hide), was typically around 40-45 acres but there was really no uniform standard and a full farmer’s holdings could vary anywhere from 30 to 60 acres or more. Social status of a villager depended on how much land he had. A villager with one lan of land was known as “sedlak” or full farmer. One who had half a lan (half-hide) was known as “pullanik” or half-farmer. A half-farmer typically had around 20-25 acres of land. Then there was the “ctvtlanik” or a quarter-farmer. Peasants with less than a quarter-lan were known as chalupners and cottagers.
Your ancestors therefore owned about 20-25 acres of land, more or less.
