Many thanks - looks like a real clue. Is it possible to have an image of the original entry? It is my cousins who say their grandmother was named John Willie Poole because her parents had already picked out boys names and did not see the need to change.
However, I also know that my maternal grandmother was given a boy's middle name because the child born before her had died prior to her birth. N.B., this was not at all in the same family or area of the country.
All this to say that seeing an image may help. IF it was John Willie Poole as wife to Joseph W. Dalton - the names may have given recorders some concern regarding accuracy.
