I appreciate you helping me look for this information, James! I had seen this family in my searching, and posted a query on that county site. As far as I could tell from looking at online census records that is the only child with the Dalton surname that might fit the description in W.Va. at that time. I do realize that not every family reported, or did not report all members, etc. So, the situation may be somewhat different, but I think it will probably wind up being somewhat similar to what you have hypothesized. There is one thing that nigles at me with that scenario, though- from everyone I have talked to that remembers him well, and from my own vague memories, he always loved children dearly and wouldn't do anything to hurt one. So, it doesn't make sense that he would willingly abandon his own child/ren. I guess we will just have to keep digging and see if we can find out more, or if someone else with info will see this and respond.
