Alecia: I do agree that the Debose family of Grimes County, Texas and the Debose family of Morehouse Parish, Louisiana connect, however I do not believe that Amos of Grimes and Amos of Morehouse are the same. I am not the expert, can you prove they were the same person? Amos of Texas claimed he was born in Texas and he likely was--as he appears to have been the son of Jake Debose who arrived in Texas in 1844. In 1870 you find Amos living with his parents, Thomas and Lucy "Dubose" in Marengo County, Alabama. In 1880 you will find him in Morehouse Parish, Louisiana married to Julia. Amos and his wife were living near his parents and sibling in Ward 5 of Morehouse Parish, where the Debose (var spellings) lived for several generations. The census of Morehouse Parish in 1880 was full of spelling/vital errors. Amos' last name is spelled as De Bay on that schedule. In that same year you will find Amos of Grimes County living in Grimes with his wife Diannah Bradley, who he married in Grimes County on June 20, 1872. This Amos named his son Jacob or Jake, likely because he (Amos) was the son of Jacob called Jake Debose who came to Grimes County, Texas in 1844 as the slave of George Stoneham. George Stoneham came to Texas from Conecuh County, Alabama. Jacob Debose had been enslaved by Stoneham since he was 12 years old, and served as Stoneham's driver for 30 plus years.
