It never ceases to amaze me how Dr. Edward MacLysaght (who is the author of this account of the origins of the Desmond surname in his book "More Irish Families") and others could have made such a statement. He later revised it in "The Surnames of Ireland" and admits that "...some [Desmonds] may be descended from a junior branch of the Fitzgeralds of Desmond." (p.80) The Earls consistently signed their names "Desmond" from about the 8th--Thomas, who was beheaded--on. I would revise MacLysaght's statement to read, "It is possible that some Desmonds may be descended from someone other than the Desmond Geraldines--from some Gaelic-Irish sept--but there are no specific instances in any of the Irish annals or surviving records to support this. Only the so-called "Book of Munster" makes reference to a Gaelic-Irish origin of the name." See Humphrey J.
