Thank you for your wonderful, detailed message, Diana! My father's father told him about Desmonds in Buffalo, New York. Oddly, it was in connection with a Desmond who made uniforms for Union soldiers during the Civil War. However, it seems very possible that the Buffalo Desmonds you described are connected Buffalo Desmonds Grandpa described. As for carpenters in Schull, my original immigrant Desmond ancestor is Timothy J. Desmond (b. 1847), son of John Desmond and Margaret Regan. Family tradition holds that Timothy and his father were builders; they built houses and/or churches in Co. Cork. Timothy Desmond was definitely a skilled carpenterand builder in Boston, using a special peg join style of construction without the use of nails. This data comes from my grandfather, a highly reliable source. There are connections to shipbuilding in my family. My grandfather and two of his brothers were marine engineers, served in the merchant marine. My ancestor Timothy J. Desmond's sons were John Patrick, Cornelius Francis, Daniel Anthony, and Gerald Aloysius. (A baby named James died.) Two daughters were named Margaret Mary and Agnes Rosalie (baby Mary V. died). The godfather Patrick Desmond (carpenter/cabinetmaker who lived on Tremont Street, Roxbury?), was born in Mass. Patrick Desmond was probably a relative. I believe the Desmonds tended to name children after relatives, so the names John, Cornelius, Daniel, Gerald, and Timothy may be family names. I am waiting for information from Ireland. Please contact me. I would like to share information about the Desmond family of Schull. K. Desmond Notify Administrator about this message?
