A biography/family history of Joseph P. Donnelly is included in "Montana, Its Story and Biography", Vol 3, pages 1085 & 1086. Father: Patrick Donnelly, born 15 Dec 1832, County, Meath, Ireland. In early manhood he came to the US and resided in NY and was a pioneer farmer of Kane County, IL, and later of Delaware County, IA. On 29 Jun 1855, Patrick married Julia Smith. They were parents of twelve children.
Joseph grew up on the family farm and went to school in the winter. At age 16, he entered St. Joseph College, Dubuque, and later St. Mary's College in St. Mary's Kansas; 1897, graduated from Creighton University at Omaha; in 1898, received a Master of Arts degree at Georgetown University at District of Columbia, and graduated from the law course in 1899. I 1899, Joseph had the distinction of being the first American lawyer to open an office in the Phillipine Islands. He located to San Francisco in 1904 and established a business as a lawyer. Joseph lost all his property in the San Francisco earthquake and fire in the spring of 1906. He then located to Butte, MT, where he worked in the Hennessy Mercantile Company, became cashier and credit man for A.C.M. Hardware Co., then moved to Helena, MT, as state manager of the National Surety Company of New York for three years. For four years he was chief deputy county attorney for Lewis and Clark county, and on 9 Apr 1917 he moved to Havre, MT, where he set up a large practice.
On 7 Jul 1904, Joseph married Miss Mary G. Donovan, a native of St. Louis, MO. Children: Marian J.; Charles C.; Joseph P., Jr.; Catherine L.
