C. S. STEATNS spent two days of last week in Des Moines attending the
meeting of the Iowa Bankers Association. (*Note - Pretty sure this should be
Stearns.)
Dr. BURNS is at Gravity in Ringgold county this week. He expects to make
regular trips into that territory hereafter.
The K. P. celebration of Decoration day did not come off at Leon as
announced, so the lodge from here did not go down.
Grandma JONES left Thursday for Garden Grove, where she will make her home
with a daughter this summer. - Mt. Ayr Journal.
Kemp ATEN came home from Iowa City last week. He is now a full-fledged
lawyer and will soon seek a location in some neighboring town.
Miss Edith DUNTON, who had been here for some time visiting with her sister,
Mrs. BENNETT, left last Thursday for her home at Reading, Michigan.
Jake WARNER has recently bought a clarionet. When you go after your mail you
may get a little music thrown in but there will be no extra charge.
Will KENTNER came down from Lucas last Saturday to spend a few days visiting
with relatives. He says the miners' strike has made things rather dull up
there.
Chas. CESSNA, has sold his farm near Garden Grove to W. A. ALEXANDER of Leon.
The sale was made through the agency of BLEDSOE & MCKIBBIN. - Humeston Era.
The doctors are holding a district meeting at Ottumwa to-day. We notice by
the program that Dr. TODD, formerly of this place, is one of the principal
speakers at the meeting.
Mrs. Hugh BROWN returned last week from Chicago, where she has been spending
several months with her son Thomas. She will make her home this summer with
her daughter, Mrs. K. J. BARTLETT.
Prof. VERTZ and wife, who are to have charge of our schools the coming year,
arrived from Gilman, on Friday last. They will occupy the house int he north
part of town formerly occupied by R. D. HALL.
Prof. R. A. HARKNESS came in from Fairfield last Saturday and spent Sunday
with his sister, Mrs. J. O. PARRISH. He was on his way to Leon, where he is
engaged as instructor in normal institute now in session.
Miss Jessie EVANS met with quite a serious accident last Thursday. She had
been picking mulberries and in getting from the tree she alighted on two nails
which ran through her foot, making and ugly wound.
Capt. SMITH left last Monday for Council Bluffs to attend the Grand
Encampment, as a delegate from the G. A. R. post of this place. Mrs. L. W. SULLIVAN
also went being delegate from the Woman's Relief Corps.
S. H. AMOS received a letter from Dr. CONE stating that his father, Hawley
CONE, of Downing, Mo., died suddenly while on a visit at his home in Oskaloosa,
on the 14th. Dr. CONE has the sympathy of many friends at this place.
