Dear Eric I read with considerable interest the note below which you submitted to genealogy.com. My great-grandmother (maiden name Isabella McReynolds) was first married to William Smith who was a vet in Armagh. After William's death she married William John Gabbie and the family moved to Jocelyn Street in Dundalk. My grandmother married Samuel Henry Whan (Whan & Co was a fairly large bootmakers and drapers business in Clanbrassil Street in Dundalk) and had four children, one of whom was my father. My grandfather's family moved to Belfast, as a consequence of the troubles in Dundalk. My father married Mary Moore in 1940 and I was born in Belfast 1941 - at the height of the bombing raids on the city. William John Gabbie was a graduate of Glasgow University (15 April 1874). The Royal College of Veterinary Science records show that he died on 28 November 1917. I have a silver clock and barometer set, presented to W J Gabbie in 1900 by the officers of the 3rd Dragoon Guards. My uncle told me that this was because Gabbie cured the regiment's horses of some rather nasty disease. You mention that you have more information about Gabbie and I should be pleased if you would let me have anything which you consider might interest me. I should also appreciate anything about the Smiths. Regards David Notify Administrator about this message?
