John Hightower Gardner and Margaret Florence Bramlitt 1860-1920 Prentiss Co., MS

Searching for information about John Hightower Gardner's military service. He was a Confederate soldier during the Civil War/Between the States. He lived in Prentiss Co., Miss., and married Margaret Florence Bramlitt, daughter of Mary C. Anderson and Jesse Lunsford Bramlitt, in 1870. He received a pension of a dollar per day based on his war service, according to the Dec. 7, 1928, edition of the Booneville Independent newspaper. John was born Sept. 6, 1849, in Pike Co., Ga., the son of Mary Hightower and Robert Gardner. John died Jan. 1, 1939, in or near Booneville, Prentiss Co., Miss., and was buried in Osborne Creek Cemetery.

John H. Guardner, 50, born in September 1848 in Georgia to parents born there, farmer, owner of a mortgage-free farm, with wife, Maggie Guardner, 49, born in March 1851 in Tennessee to a mother born there, father born in Alabama, keeping house, married thirty years, 1900 U. S. Census for Blackland Precinct, Beat 1, Prentiss Co., Miss., with four children born in Mississippi: Florance, 22, March 1878, school teacher; Lucile, 18, May 1882; Bramlet, 14, May 1886; and Worrine, 12, May 1888 (NARA Film T623:826:239A). Also listed are two boarders born in Mississippi: Essay Cook, 17, October 1883, and Molley Casat, 12, July 1887.

John H. Gardner, 60, born in Georgia to parents born there, farmer, general farm, owner of a mortgage-free farm, first marriage, with wife, Maggie, 60, born in Tennessee to a mother born there, father born Mississippi, keeping house, first marriage, mother of eight children, six living, married thirty-nine years, 1910 U. S. Census for Blackland Precinct, Beat 2, Prentiss Co., Miss., with one grown daughter: Lucile, 27, born in Mississippi (NARA Film T624:756:306A). Also listed are three others (their daughter Florence Richardson, 35, born in Mississippi to a mother born there, father born Georgia, teacher, rural school, mother of one living child, first marriage, and husband, Alonzo M. 37, born in Mississippi to a mother born in North Carolina, father born in Georgia, second marriage, farmer, general farm, and grandson Edward (Ernest) E., 4 1/2, born Mississippi to parents born there.

J. H. Gardner, 70, born in Georgia to parents born there, with wife, Maggie, 70, born in Tennessee to a mother born there, father born in Alabama, 1920 U.S. Census for Blackland Precinct, Beat 2, Prentiss Co., Miss., with one grown daughter: Lucille, 31, born in Mississippi (NARA Film T625:891:158B). Their daughter Florence Richardson and husband, Alonzo M., lived nearby.

Margaret and John’s eight children, all born in Prentiss Co., Miss., are Dr. Robert Bramlitt Gardner, born Nov. 6, 1871, and died June 22, 1912, buried in Osborne Creek Cemetery, who married Mary Lilly on June 15, 1904; Gordon Lamar Gardner, born June 2, 1874, and died in 1945, buried in Osborne Creek Cemetery, who married Ella Donaldson; Mary Rebecca Gardner, born March 8, 1876, and died May 25, 1876; Maggie Florence Gardner, born Feb. 6, 1877, and died July 16, 1962, who married Alonzo Mack Richardson, born Dec. 9, 1873, died Aug. 5, 1952, both buried Osborne Creek Cemetery; May Beall Gardner, born May 1, 1879, and died Oct. 12, 1879; Lucyle/Lucille, born May 11, 1882, and died Jan. 14, 1964; Jessie Bramlitt Gardner, born March 14, 1885, who married a man named Harper; and Warrene Anderson Gardner, born May 31, 1888, who married Benjamin T. Weeks.
