Freida:
Good to hear from you. I think you and I are stuck in the same place. However, I have a new theory I am working on that "James Hiler and Mary (unknown) Hiler are potentially his parents. The following is PURE unfounded speculation:

My conjecture is that James and Mary are William C. Hiler's parents. For several reasons- mostly abround the relationship between the Turners/Childress/Hiler marriages and census records . . .

1.       Consider that James and Mary Hiler in the 1860 census are the only Hiler (senior age) that live in proximity to William C and Susan Hiler. Maybe James and Mary are William's parents and Thomas A Hiler his brother.

2.       James Hiler (age 22), also listed in the census nearby has Nancy Turner (age 55) living in the household with him and his wife Mary.

3.       Hardin Davis (brother to Israel Davis - Susan A Davis Hiler's father) had a son named Micajah C. Davis who married Rebecca Turner. Rebecca Turner is the dauther to Moses Turner(b.1813) and Martha Turner. Moses "could be the son to Nancy Turner, listed as age 55 living with James and Mary Hiler in the 1850 census. "IF" Nancy was Moses mother, she would have been 18 years old when Moses was born.

Also note that Pittsylvania Vital Statistics lists James W. Hiler as marrying Elizabeth Turner in 1849, Pittsylvania County, VA. Is it possible that Mary is actually "Mary Elizabeth?" Yet to confirm.

Here's another possibility:
1860 United States Federal Census
Household of James Hiler
Name Home in 1860
(City,County,State) Age in 1860 Estimated Birth Year Birthplace Gender View Image Save This

James Hiler               Southern District, Pittsylvania, VA        50 1809 North Carolina Male
Mary Hiler               Southern District, Pittsylvania, VA       50 1809 Virginia Female
Susan Hiler               Southern District, Pittsylvania, VA        20 1839 Virginia Female
Emily Hiler               Southern District, Pittsylvania, VA        16 1843 Virginia Female
Ellender Childress        Southern District, Pittsylvania, VA        96 1763 Virginia Female
(Note: Israel Davis, Jr. married Susan Childress. Is it possible that Ellender CHildress is other(?) to Susan Childress?)

What are your thought on this? You and I have both been trying to find proofs of Joseph T Hiler as father, but I am not convinced yet that this other scenario doesn't make more sense. I'd love to hear your thoughts about this theory.
thanks, Donna
