Trying to find information on SMith-Howe name change

I am lloking for information on my Great-Grandfather, Nelson Wade Howe's family. Nelson was born as nelson smith. this is supported by the 1880 census for San Francisco, where my great-grandfather is libing with his widowed mother Emma S. Howe, his sister Maude m Smith, (Neslon is listedas Nelson Smith)m and his half-brother Charles K. Howe. It is believed that Neslon bioligical father's given nmae was Francis, his original surname was talafarro, andlater changd to smith. It is is also thought that Francis talafrro smith may have been from Venice Italy. However, this is only supposition based onorla family history. What is known is that my greatGrandfather step-father, Charles Howe Marrid his mother Emma Smith in 1874,and died in 1879. Nelson and his sister were still going by the smith surname smith in 1880. Sometime between 1880 and 1900 (when they are married they are using the howe surname.) It seems the 1890 cneus is no longer in existance, so I need some sort of clue as to when my Great-Grandfather Nelson and his sister Maude began using the name Howe, in lie of smith. If I can find this information, maaybe I can find some information on my great-grandfather's bioligcal family.

thank you,
Keith H. Seymour
paternal great-grandson of Nelson Howe (formerly Neslon Smith)
