To All HUBBARD - SMITH - CHILDERS - WILLIAMS Researchers I am working on a theory of our ancestry. It consist of pulling and tying two loose ends together. We have our family back to Robert A. Hubbard born about 1814-15 in South Carolina, and being able to track him from the Pendleton District South Carolina to Gordon and Cherokee Co. GA. Then into Etowah County Alabama, and in 1880 in Lamar County Texas Robert said his father came from Penn. and his mother from South Carolina. I have tacked a Hubbard family down from Penn./Virginia (many counties in these two states at times were confused to which State they were in) this left many settlers not clear which State they lived in. I have said all the above to make the point of this family shows they come from Virginia. I found a Peter Hubbard from Virginia/Penn ?, two of his son John H. Hubbard, Sr. and William Hubbard are the only two of his sons that went to the Pendleton District of South Carolina, both were born around 1795. This would make them the right age to be the father of our Robert A. born in 1815. Now John H. Hubbard Sr. died at an early age and his brother William raised his children. In respect to all this it is very possible that our Robert A. Hubbard may be lost to the other family records, and come from these lines. (I recently discovered a line on my fathers side that was lost, I had to go to the local counties to find and verify records of her being a child- so this does exist in genealogy research) A good friend and fellow Hubbard researcher Patti, found the Marriage of Robert A. Hubbard and Lucinda Smith: Source--Pendleton Messenger, SC Marriages: Robert A. Hubbard married Lucinda Smith 11 April 1841. Then she found JOHN HUBBARD and JAMES SMITH living next to each other in 1840. This led me to research this a little deeper as Lucinda was a Smith. Then I go back to 1832 where William Hubbard applied for a Revolutionary War Pension (This William was the father to John Hubbard), There was a J.M. and Hester Ann Smith who signed with William Hubbard verifying his war service- they were neighbors. Then I found that this J.M. Smith was the father of James Smith that lived next to John Hubbard. I have not yet verified James Smith as the father of Lucinda, or John Hubbard as the father Robert A. Hubbard. But I feel this is on the right track, and further research and with the help of other Hubbard and Smith and Childers researchers we will solve this. Then Patti found that since Robert A. does not appear in the 1840 census in SC, yet he was married there in 1841 to Lucinda Smith, she checked the same area in 1830...it narrows down to 3 possible’s as his father: Pickens SC 1830:(that was the Pendleton area where the paper picked up on the marriage, remember?) Jeremiah Hubbard head 1M 15-20, 1M 40-50 1F 5-10, 1F 29-30, 1F 30-40 Luke Hebbard head 1M 10-15, 1M 15-20, 3M 20-30 No females in household John Hubbard head 1M 10-15, 1M 20-30, 1M (head 30-40) 3 F under 5, 2 F 5-10, 1F 30-40 Then the second house down: James Smith head 1M 10-15, 1M 15-20, 1M 20-30 1F under 5, 1F 5-10, 1F 20-30 Also these families have strong documented Cherokee Connections as the boys when they came down south did marry Cherokee girls, such as the Pratter and Childers and Brackett families. Many of them and their cousins of other names, Brackett, Wilkerson and Childers are some that went on the "Trail of Tears". You may have noticed the HUBBARD'S and CHILDERS and SMITHS listed from this area of Cherokee Blood. Uriah Hubbard the Georgia Cherokee Planter was one of them. Uriah, Joseph, John, Luke, David and Jeremiah were some of the names related to the families, and all have and claim Cherokee Blood. My mother always told me that she was of Cherokee Blood on her Hubbard side. And with the old stories and some old family photos there is no denying it. Also the Childers family ties in big with all these families. Now my GGG-Grandfather John Williams who I have documented as being of Cherokee Blood married Mary Childers. They also came out of the Pendleton District area, with all the Cherokee Childers. John Williams and Mary Childers granddaughter Mary Bartlett married Leonard Franklin Hubbard the son of Robert Hubbard. All these families and names seen to be and tie together. At the time of the Cherokee removal in Georgia our Robert would have been 23 in 1838. He would have been old enough to make it on his own. Most 23 year old young men especially being Cherokee and Independent were not going to be taken. -(now I know none of the rest of our Hubbard family are surly not stubborn and independent, ours wrote the book on stubborn- that's what my children and wife tells me?, LOL). I am sure Robert would not have been taken easy and most likely fled to escape. There are many records of many young men and families hiding out and blending in, and moving to other areas to escape the removal of the Cherokee. That would have made it easy for other family to lose track of one another, and after a generation or two (being many miles apart-no phone or cell phones) families forget their cousins and kinfolk. And they are lost to time, also families where afraid to talk of being Cherokee and their family history. It is recorded in the Cherokee Applications of some of the Hubbard and Childers families, where they did not talk about it or the children did not know who their Grandparents where because of this fear of being found out. These families are in the same areas as our Robert, in both South Carolina and Georgia, and they also have strong Williams and Childers intermarriage as ours. And with the finding on Roberts grandsons saying they were Indian, it all begins to tie together. Also the names of John and Robert and Rilla are prominent in our line, as in some of these other families. I believe if we can work form both ends we can connect these families, to be one in the same. I along with other researchers have hit our heads on the brick wall of this family many times, but WITH US ALL WORKING TOGETHER and being open minded to new ideas and thoughts hopefully we can solve this. PLEASE- I encourage the help of all Hubbard and Smith and Childers researchers who may be associated with these families to join us in solving this Genealogy Puzzle. I look forward to hearing from all researchers and will help and share with anyone I can, Thank you all so much, Danny J. Skillman.
