Is it possible the initial surname was Hüber when in Germany. My research of my own family back to Germany revealed the following: My Great Grandfather Gottlieb Hüber was born in Baden-Württemberg, Schwaben, Bavaria, Germany in 1831. He immigrated to Philadelphia PA in 1856. He married Margaret Barry (Ireland) in Philadelphia PA in 1864 and had nine children with her between 1867 and 1887. There name has been misspelled in 1880 Census as Huber, but has been spelled Hueber since then and up till today. Hueber is the Anglo spelling of Hüber, and so used in America dependent on how well one was versed in both the German and English languages. The German names of Huber and Hüber are two different names and pronounced differently in Germany. Huber (u-Burr) Hüber (Hue-bare) or (who-bare) and therefore spelled as Hueber to distinguish it from Huber. A lot of folks today pronounce Huber and Hueber the same as u-burr. Th Hueber folks are therefore mispronouncing their own names, based on what was passed down. Just my 2 cents worth Notify Administrator about this message?
