Corrections to my known Humphries line
Posted by: Ron Humphries (ID *****0004) Date: September 16, 2007 at 12:16:45

This message is to make a few corrections and additions to what my family line based on more research that has been done in the past year.

Myself (Ron Humphries) and other related Humphries researchers have long believed that the following Humphries line was our known line...Samuel Jesse Humphries + Dolly Fox Humphries to sons Charles H. Humphries, Benjamin Franklin Humphries and Dolly Ann (Virginia) Humphries....Charles H. Humphries marrying Catherine Whiteside in Ca. ...Benjamin Franklin Humphries marrying Willy (Elizabeth) Hester Martin and then her sister Laura Ann McCutcheon Martin..Benjamin dying in Hill County Texas in May of 1870....And Dolly Ann marrying the brother of Elizabeth and Laura Ann Martin (F. M. "Frank" Frances Marion Martin) with both Dolly Ann and FM Martin dying in Brookhaven Miss....

Further research has convincing proof that the Samuel Humphries that married Dolly Fox in King George Co. was not the father of our Charles H. , Benjamin Franklin and Dolly Ann Humphries...This Samuel and Dolly Fox was almost certainly related to our Jesse Humphries but could not be the father and mother for the following reasons:

Jesse and his complete family (correct names and birth dates and birth locations) was listed in the 1850 census in Marengo Ala....The same location that Benjamin and Elizabeth were recorded to have been married Nov. 22 1849. Their last name was mispelled in some of the records as "Humphrey"...a common mistake.

In the 1850 census for King George County Virginia, Samuel Humphries and wife Dolly (Fox) were still residing there...And a Congressman Mr John Taliaferro (in an attempt to settle Capt. Nathan. Fox's Estate (Nath. "W. D." Fox being the executor) states "Fox at his death left several children, sons and daughters-One of his daughters resides within a mile of the undersigned (Mr. Taliaferro) -she is the wife of Saml Humphries-and one or two of his sons were recently living in the county of King George. (He later states that Nathaniel Fox lived his entire life in Stafford Co.)
this was dated 29 March 1850.

Jesse and Dolly Humphries lived in Virginia till about 1840 (Jesse sold his land in King George Co. in 1838)...His last-born, daughter Dolly Ann (called Virginia) was born Apr. 30 1834 in King George Co. Virginia...By the 1850 census Jesse and family are in Alabama with Dolly Ann being listed on the census at age 15...The next year, 1851, his son Benjamin and wife Elizabeth start having children in Louisanna (Charles Wesley b. 9/19/1851 ....and Dolly Ann marries F. M. Martin in 1853...

There is a record of Jesse Humphries marrying Dolly Acred in 1819 in King George County and all indications are that this is the correct Jesse and Dolly who left King George Co. Virginia in about 1840 and were in Alabama in 1850. Jesse Humphries also purchased land (two tracts) in 1860 in DeSoto Co. La. ...The same location his daughter Dolly Ann Humphries married F. M. Martin, May 6 1853...F.M. Martin and Dolly Ann are also listed in DeSoto Co. La. in the 1860 census and later in Hill County Texas in 1870 (where her brother Benjamin and family moved in 1865).

My research indicates that Jesse was the son of Anderson Humphries who died in King George County in 1809-1810...His wife is thought to have been named Nancy (or Ann) and she later married a fellow by the name of Scott and died and was buried as Nancy Scott around 1842-1845. Jesse Humphries and Nancy Scott lived next door to one-another in the Tax Records of the mid 1830's (King George Co. Virginia)...

Through DNA testing we now know that my Humphries line matches up with a extremely high degree of certainty (99%) with another Humphries that can trace his line back to William Humphries b. abt 1750 who married a Marriane Walker in King George Co. Virginia and later moved to the Rutherford area of North Carolina. This DNA tie-in indicates that this William Humphries and my Anderson Humphries were most probably brothers (William also named one of his sons "Anderson"). Some records of William indicate he was born in England and others indicate he was born in the northern Neck of Virginia...My best guess at this time is the family ties to the Humphries family in Northumberland and Sussex Co. Virginia beginning in about 1640...However...I do not have any substantial proof at this time. I would add that if we could get more male Humphries to submit to DNA testing...these lines could be proved to be connected although the exact lineage down from father to son will remain unknown until more research uncovers the whole story.

Until this resent research dispelled the notion that my line went back to Samuel Jesse Humphries and Dolly Fox...I was fairly confident that this information was correct. But overwhelming information to the contrary now leads me to think with a high degree of certainty that my Jesse Humphries did in fact marry Dolly Acred not Dolly Fox. I have doubts that Jesse's name was "Samuel Jesse" as none of his offspring to my knowledge were named "Samuel" but a number were named "Jesse" or some derivative of that name (Tesse, Wesse, etc.)...As always...I am open to any thoughts on this line....Ron Humphries
