John Jackson -- name change/Americanized name misinterpretation

Thank you to all for your help with this.

I need to say that I stopped believing that names were changed by immigration long ago and I did not mean to imply that this was the case in my posting. My gggrandfather chose to change his name. So, I still need help with the issue at hand -- what was his read name?

I have poured over ship manifests posted online for hours and have not had much luck. I also have been unable to secure a marriage lisence for he and my gggrandmother, Margaret Meehan. I simply cannot find one on file. That is not to say it does not exist -- maybe I am looking under the wrong spelling, etc.

Alas, I will look at the suggestions given and try again. I only know what I know from death certificates (minimal info), birth certificates for his children, cesuses, and oral tradition. Unfortunately anyone who could recall his real name is gone or unable to do so.

I appreciate the kind responses I have received and will continue my search.

Thanks -
Gigi
