Wendy

No W in Slovak alphabet and no V in Polish.
In Slovak : ZAVADA; in Polish : ZAWADA;
The English Y is a J sound.
What was language of your ancestor? Where did you find GULEU written? What documentation were you able to locate?
Eileen found ZAVADA coming from Zanuto which is Zamuto (Zamutov, Slovak Republic) ZAVADA does list in Zamutov's phone book.
ZAVADA Ignacs from Zannuto; Tozse (Jozsef) from Zamuto going to cousin Janos (John) Pawejak ?
